How to Set Up a VPN

February 9th, 2018

In order to remotely access your work computer’s desktop, or to ensure that you are on a totally private Internet connection when you are using public wi-fi, being signed into a virtual private network (VPN) is essential. A VPN creates a completely secure connection between your computer and the network you are accessing remotely by creating an encrypted pathway for data to travel safely. Setting up a VPN is simple: if you follow these steps, you will be able to establish a secure VPN connection in no time!

Step 1: Choose a VPN Service

While it is possible to get a VPN through your company or school, there are also many independent VPN providers available. Some of these are free, as long as you allow ads to be placed in your browser, but others allow ad-free VPN service for a small monthly fee. Expect a good VPN service to cost between $50-100 per year, depending on the level of streaming you need it to handle.

Step 2: Set Up Your VPN Credentials

Your VPN provider should give you instructions for how to initially set up the credentials you will need each time you log into your secure connection. Basically you will need to install the VPN software on your computer, add a connection via your computer’s security settings, and configure the VPN by typing in your username, the type of VPN service provider, the provider’s server address, and your authentication information, which includes a password and something called a “shared secret”- a special code that your VPN provider will give you.

Step 3: Click ‘Connect.’

That’s all there is to it! Once you’ve set up your VPN, remember to use it every time you log onto public wi-fi, and use it exclusively when you set up an RDP (remote desktop protocol) connection with your work computer for remote access. You can configure your computer settings to have your VPN prominently displayed on your desktop or in your dock, so you can connect at the click of a mouse. You may also enlist the services of an IT provider who offers small business VPN monitoring, to ensure the total security of your connection and protect your sensitive company data.
